For more information about an organization, read the following interview.

Introduction

To begin with, we would like you to briefly tell us a little about your organization.

Prevent Child Abuse-New Jersey promotes great childhoods, positive parenting, and healthy child development. We help parents nurture their children, so they get off to a great start. Our programs in all 21 NJ counties serve 50,000 children and families each year.

  1. What do you do exactly?

I am the Director of Development and Communications. I oversee special events and collaborate on grant proposals. I manage the website and write descriptive literature that informs the public about our work, such as pamphlets, brochures, annual reports, and signage. I represent our nonprofit in the community by speaking at businesses, schools, service organizations, etc. I help us build partnerships with other stakeholders. I also mentor volunteers and student interns.

  1. What motivates you?

I have been an advocate for children’s rights and have volunteered in organizations that serve young people for a long time. So, it is a natural fit that I am a member of the leadership team of an organization whose sole purpose is to ensure that all New Jersey children have the happy, healthy and safe childhood that they deserve – free of abuse and neglect. I enjoy having the opportunity to work with talented professionals and passionate volunteers.

  1. Tell us about your goals

I hope to continue informing members of the community about the prevention of child abuse and neglect. A lot of funding and media attention is directed toward helping children who have been abused and neglected and getting them the necessary services and supports they need to heal. However, it is important to invest in proven, evidence-based prevention programs so that no child is harmed in the first place!

  1. What was the hardest/toughest moment you had to deal with?

Working in the nonprofit sector, every day can be a challenge.  We are always concerned about maintaining funding for our important work and tasked with identifying new sources of funding to develop additional programs to serve parents and children. We strive to be optimistic that we can continue to grow to meet the needs of NJ families.

  1. What was the most fulfilling moment that happened to you?

We draw inspiration when we hear feedback from families and professionals that something we did – a parenting class, a home visit, an educational conference, a community presentation, helped someone to change their outlook, to improve their parenting skills, to adapt their classroom methodologies, etc. We are proud to foster change that directly benefits children.

  1. What separates you from the rest? Why you?

Many organizations work with children and families, but Prevent Child Abuse-New Jersey is the only organization that is solely dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect in all forms for all NJ children.

  1. Do you have any upcoming events in the forthcoming months?

On March 19 at 6 pm, we’re partnering with The Rotary Club of New Brunswick to present the 2nd Annual Rags to Runway – a fashion show where students transform thrift shop “rags” into garments for the “runway”. The event is emceed by 1450 WCTC’s Bert Baron and held at The Imperia in Somerset. Proceeds are shared with PCA-NJ.

On April 7 at 8 pm, we’re hosting An Evening of Wine & Chocolate at The Haddon Fortnightly in Haddonfield. Rutgers University Professor Gary Pavlis, a noted wine expert, will educate guests who will sample various wines paired with chocolates. Guests will also enjoy door prizes and a tricky tray.

On May 10 at 6 pm, we will celebrate our 39th Anniversary Gala at The Westin Governor Morris in Morristown, honoring children’s advocate Michael Dervos. Guests will enjoy a cocktail hour, dinner buffet, and silent/live auctions.

  1. What is it that you love most about what you do?

I enjoy making a difference in the lives of children.

  1. What is the biggest challenge you’re faced with today?

There are so many community needs that require attention, so we need to increase our name recognition and identify new supporters who share our passion for improving the lives of children and ensuring they have the great childhoods they deserve.

  1. Anything else you would like to add?

April is the national observation of Child Abuse Prevention Month when we implement our Pinwheels for Prevention campaign. We ask individuals, businesses, communities, service organizations, houses of worship, etc. to “plant” pinwheel gardens. The pinwheel is fun and whimsical and was chosen as a national symbol of the great childhoods we desire for all children. Blue and silver 12″ metallic pinwheels are on sale now for $1 each (cash, check, credit card). Please contact us for more information.
